Canoeing Map of the Mason Tract.

AuSable - South Branch

Starting from Watters Edge going North to the mainstream you have the best canoe trail in Michigan. Not much wider than a quiet country road the South Branch's water is home to Brown Trout, Brook Trout, and a few Northern Pike.

Ausable Brown Trout

The river current is 3 to 4 mph.
Average depth is 2 feet and some places 5+ , in the Spring the river is higher.
No rapids or dams to portage on the South Branch.

The George Mason Wilderness Retreat begins at Chase Br and the take out at Smith Br is an average paddle time of 4 hours.

Fishing in the Mason Tract is restricted to "Fly Fishing Only". Other sections of the river are open to non-restricted fishing. You must have a trout stamp to fish this river.

For a small fee DNR campsites are located along the river. These campsites offer a firepit, table, water, and toilets.

May and September are best months for paddling and fishing, cooler weather, and the river is not crowded. October offers the wonderful colors of Autumn.

Upstream from Roscommon the river is narrow and fallen trees block the way in many places.
